Companion and assistive social robots

  • Through the use of behavioural and qualitative methods, Katie is investigating whether it is possible to form a meaningful connection with a robot. She is interested in individual differences in attachment, and whether a robot’s features can be altered to encourage ‘bonding’. Katie undertakes experiments using mechanical, animal-like, and humanoid robots, to address these questions.

  • Using methods from experimental psychology, and machine learning, Guy’s research examines how caregivers disclose and vocalize their emotions and needs to social robots, and how these can reduce caregivers’ stress and burden. Guy hopes to identify caregivers’ emotional states and needs, test the viability of integrating these in natural settings, and personalise robotic interventions for improving well-being.
